tidal mass is a site-specific kinetic artwork anchored between high and low tidal marks on the Strand Beach, Townsville. The three hardwood pods absorb and transfer the kinetic energy contained in the tidal flows and encroaching waves, each pod rolling on its individual chained radius. At low tide the pods become static, essentially beached objects that the public can easily interact with, encouraging an awareness of the seas inherent power as they discover the objects’ size and mass, that only hours earlier had been effortlessly rocked and tossed around by the tidal movement of water.
